Rose’s dream is to become a famous designer in the fashion world, but a terrible accident leaves Rose scarred beyond recognition in this remake of David Cronenberg’s cult classic by fellow Canadian horror provocateurs, The Soska Sisters.

Rabid (1977)

In David Cronenberg’s must-see cult favourite, a woman named Rose (Marilyn Chambers) develops a thirst for blood after receiving experimental surgery. When Rose wakes up, she finds a stinger under her armpit which she uses to feed off victims, who later turn rabid and attack others. RABID is body horror as only Cronenberg can do, with sex and death inextricably linked thanks to Rose’s phallic parasite.

12 December:

Memento

Leonard remembers everything up to the night his wife was brutally killed. But since then he has suffered from amnesia.

Pin

An emotionally neglected brother and sister take comfort in their imaginary friend Pin, a anatomical dummy belonging to their doctor father. Sister Ursula happily entertains her brother’s delusions, but when she gets a new boyfriend and becomes absent, Leon and Pin begin to turn on her and anyone that gets in the way of their special family. Reminiscent of Hitchcock’s Psycho with its unsettling psycho-sexual familial feel, PIN is an underrated ’80s horror gem.

The Police Are Blundering in the Dark

During an outbreak of violent murders in the area targeting young women, a journalist searching for a female friend gone missing ends up in a villa owned by an eccentric photographer.

The Killer is One of Thirteen

A widow invites thirteen guests to stay at her rural mansion. She reveals to them that she suspects whoever killed her husband must be one of them. Soon, they too are being murdered one by one.

Girl in Room 2A

A sadistic killer cult kidnaps and sacrifices beautiful women. A young girl, just paroled from prison, moves into a strange house and appears to be the cult’s next victim.

Hail to the Deadites

A documentary about the fans of the Evil Dead films and explores the classic franchise’s undying and ever-growing popularity.

  1. For those who’ve not seen The Advent Calendar, it’s worth making time for. I was expecting it to be proper tat, but it’s actually really well made and a great story that’s surprising moving in places.
