Podcast of the Week: Smash The Media

❉ Two generations come head-to-head in this brand new podcast where TV Producer Guy Lambert and vlogger Danny Simm smash the media world apart!

We’re big fans of podcasts here at We Are Cult, and we’re always looking for more shows to subscribe to. So if you’re looking for ear candy, we’re here to help!

This week: Danny Simm & Guy Lambert tell us all about Smash The Media!

What’s your podcast about?

The media! But from two very different angles. Danny is 20, a radio/online presenter and YouTube vlogger, and Guy is a little over 40 and works in TV as well as running presenter agency GL Talent. Danny grew up with YouTube and social media, Guy with rented TVs and only 4 channels. So we see the world in very diferent ways, especially changes in the media world: Danny would happily melt down everyone’s aerials as scrap, whereas Guy is clinging onto his 4:3 copies of Timeslip on VHS. We debate the latest media news, things we’ve discovered, and seem to call out Zoella for boxing/wrestling quite often! We’ve recently become drawn into the Logan Paul controversies, and surprisingly agree quite a lot despite our different backgrounds (probably because we’re both a little bit geeky).

If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?

It’s like The Doors have crashed a sci-fi convention.

Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener? Do you have a favourite episode?

Our latest episode called ‘We forgot to mention Black Mirror!’ about Cult TV is probably a good one for the audience of this site. ‘How to find ISIS on Snapchat!’ is a good starting point in general. It covers a whole range of content from Logan Paul to Snapchat, and although heavily angled to the non-linear world Danny and Guy are on good form. ‘Offended?! Screw you!’ is probably one of our favourites because we both got quite annoyed and ranty!

What inspired you to create this podcast?

Guy is Danny’s agent, and we’re always talking about this stuff. Guy worked in TV a lot more a few years ago, and saw the move into digital space as a bit of a decline. But since working with Danny, his eyes have been opened to this bright new and exciting world. Danny is so passionate about YouTube and strongly believes this is not only the future but the NOW, so he could talk about it all for hours. He also composes the always-changing theme tunes because we never stand still (except for a cuppa).

Which guests have you had on your podcast so far?

We had Danny’s dog, Marley, in the background! Other than that, nobody so far as we’re a bit new and our studio only has two mugs.

Who would be your dream guest?

Danny would like YouTube legend Casey Neistat. Guy would go for Alice Webb from BBC Children’s. Logan Paul would be good for the subs!

Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?

We use a Behringer C3 microphone running through a M track interface into GarageBand.

What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?

Tough to say. We started out aiming for no more than 10 minutes, but we had people say they loved it and wanted more. We don’t want to take up your entire lunch break, and we want to make people think not tell them what to think, but we’re going to experiment and see what people enjoy.

Which podcasts (other than yours) would you recommend we listen to?

Danny loves one called ‘Serial Killers’, and Guy recommends another one from his talent agency client James Barr called ‘A Gay and NonGay’.

Where is your podcast available to listen to?

We’ve just launched on iTunes and we’re also on Soundcloud for now. Also available to host live in your living room for the right price.

What is the future of podcasting as a creative medium?

Huge. People are on the move so much more nowadays, especially with lengthy commutes. It’s good to hear people debate and chat, kind of like an audio Twitter but without the racism. With the rise of Smart Speakers in peoples homes (Alexa, etc) people are consuming more audio based content than ever. It’s very easy to just say “hey Siri, play the latest episode of Smash The Media”
