❉ This week: Adrift, a comic tragedy for the socially inept.
We’re big fans of podcasts here at We Are Cult, and we’re always looking for more shows to subscribe to. So if you’re looking for ear candy, we’re here to help!
This week: Geoff Lloyd tells us about Adrift with Geoff Lloyd and Annabel Port, a comic tragedy for the socially inept.
If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?
A comic tragedy for the socially inept.
Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener? Do you have a favourite episode?
They’re all much of a muchness. I’ll say episode 4, because my wife puts in an appearance, and it’s our wedding anniversary today.
What inspired you to create this podcast?
Annabel and I were on the radio together every day for years. When I decided I’d like to stop that to do a few different things, this was one of them. Once a week is fun, and hopefully it keeps the couple of dozen people who enjoyed our radio show happy.
Which guests have you had on your podcast so far?
Ed Miliband, Lily Allen, Josie Long – although they’re short contributions rather than interviews. The world doesn’t need another long form interview podcast, it’s a saturated market and people like Scroobius Pip do it so well.
Who would be your dream guest?
Annabel would say John Travolta, but I can’t think of anyone, so I’ll choose Björn Ulvaeus. He was in ABBA, and he has some very interesting thoughts about a cash-free society.
Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?
Electro-Voice RE20 mics into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 interface into Logic on an iMac, with the speech run through the Izoptope RX6 de-noiser plug in. The finished show goes through Auphonic before I upload it. For remote stuff, I use a Marantz PMD661 mk3, with an Audio-Technica AT8035 mic. Did you need a more detailed answer?
What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?
Probably 35 minutes. I worry that ours is too long, but people used to complain when the edited podcasts of the radio show were less than 45 minutes.
Which podcasts (other than yours) would you recommend we listen to?
The Allusionist, Made of Human, anything Richard Herring puts out, and there are a couple of astonishing episodes of Doug Stanhope’s podcast, titled ‘A Bisbee Cliffhanger’ parts one and two.
Where is your podcast available to listen to?
All the usual places. I’ve noticed non-Apple users get very angry at the mere mention of iTunes, but it’s difficult to tell them where to find it succinctly. RSS feeds are too techy for most, and there are umpteen apps.
What is the future of podcasting as a creative medium?
I think it’s podcast networks, like Radiotopia.
