BFI 4K UHD and Blu-ray releases for August and September 2025.

The BFI has announced its home entertainment releases for August and September 2025. Highlights include two Werner Herzog films on 4K UHD for the first time and another classic from the Akira Kurosawa catalogue on 4K UHD.

11 August: THE HIDDEN FORTRESS on UHD and Blu-ray

THE HIDDEN FORTRESS

The next film from Akira Kurosawa to be released in a 4K restoration is THE HIDDEN FORTRESS. This 1958 masterpiece was a huge box office success for the director on its original release, and the story of a warrior and a princess trying against all odds to return to their homeland with their fortune famously inspired George Lucas when he was writing his first Star Wars film.

AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD

The BFI’s first 4K release from the Werner Herzog film collection will be 1972’s AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD. This legendary production, filmed in the Amazonian jungle, established Herzog as one of the key directors in the New German Cinema movement, and stars Klaus Kinski in the first of their five film collaborations.
