❉ This is an EP to sit up and notice of, writes Ange Chan.
Introducing MSX1, aka the musical endeavours of Malcolm (Malc) Southall. After many years playing in local bands, Malc gained in interest in Music Technology and has since started writing his own music. Unable to find a permanent vocalist, he decided to manage and record his own material using guest singers.
Released on 24th June, his latest title, the Lighthouse Remixes EP contains three mixes of the track Lighthouse and features vocals by Imogen Doyle, who has since signed a management deal and is writing under a different name.
The cover artwork for both the original single and the remixes is by accomplished graphic designer Simon Brett.
Expertly mastered by Peter Maher (U2, Jack White, Pixies, The Killers), it’s an EP to sit up and notice of. One of the mixes is by KeX/1 known to many in the synth camp as the very talented Lloyd Price who is a renowned musician/producer, one half of The Frixion (previously featured on We Are Cult) and who has also written, produced and performed with Massive Ego and Sigue Sigue Electronic. The track itself is impactful with Imogen’s vocals perfectly contrasting to the music, segueing together perfectly and in a very accomplished and professional way.
The second remix is a different interpretation of the original single by Jez-Allan Smith AKA Skinbag Jones aka one half of SPACEBUOY who are one of MSX1’s favourite bands and though as-yet-unsigned they have supported Erasure in the past. It’s a dream come true for Malc that Jez has remixed this track for him. This synth treatment takes the song into a different persona, moving it more towards a pop sensibility.
The final track is the original single edit of Lighthouse with guitars by Paul Jeffrey, which is a great, multi-layered, track in its own right.
