❉ More superlative synth-pop from MORE: Ange Chan on the trio’s latest single release.
Following close on the heels of June’s Provoked By Motions (watch on YouTube), Magnus Dahlberg, Mattias Jönsson and Lino Avian – aka Swedish synth-pop band MORE – have recently released their fabulous new single Self Control. This is the second single teasing their forthcoming, as-yet-untitled second album.
Jointly written and produced by all three band members, Self Control boldly opens with the lyric ‘it’s not my fault I’m always right’ and goes on to explore the confines of a relationship and the choices we make within it. At first listen, the hook was instant, and I was immediately sold on it. Like the tracks from their previous album From the Past, the lyrics relate to difficulties in a personal relationship and the challenges we face when trying to connect on a deeper emotional level, which makes it instantly relatable to their audience.
The mix of Magnus’ strong vocals mixed with multi-layered synths makes it a complex track and the various threads are brilliantly brought together in the top-class production, making it sound polished and accomplished. With distinct overtones of Depeche Mode whilst still being very much in the feeling of a song by MORE, this is a strong single which deserves to do well.
MORE are a band that I’ve supported from their beginnings, simply because they produce superlative synth-pop. Their music is always en pointe, well written, perfectly produced and brilliantly executed. Having recently been represented on synth music compilation Generation Blitz, in the form of their track Sentimental Sounds (watch on YouTube) MORE are really making waves in the synth pop scene and if Self Control is a taster of what’s to come, MORE are on track to delight us further with their much-anticipated second album.
❉ ‘Self-Control’ by MORE was released September 30, 2021: Available via Bandcamp as a Digital Track for Streaming + Download (includes unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.)
