Simply Media have announced the release of Jossy’s Giants: Series 1 and 2 on DVD for the very first time on 12th March 2018. The series originally aired on BBC one from 1986-1987.
Directed by Edward Pugh, renowned for working on some of the best children’s dramas including Byker Grove and Grange Hill, and production manager for Series Four of Monty Python (1974), this DVD set contains all 10 episodes from across the two series of this fondly remembered children’s TV show.
Written by beloved TV personality and darts commentator Sid Waddell, Jossy’s Giants features guest appearances from some of the biggest names in football at the time, including Bobby Charlton and then-England captain Bryan Robson.
The series follows the ups-and-downs of a youth football club, the Glipton Grasshoppers. The struggling team, made up of of young misfits, are yet to win a match.
Jim Barclay stars as Jossy Blair, a talented footballer whose career was cut short after injuring himself during his first game for Newcastle United. The Grasshoppers, along with their friend and number one fan Tracey (Julie Foy – Coronation Street), learn of his reputation and agree that they need his expertise. They persuade Jossy to become their new manager.
Jossy takes on the seemingly mammoth task of training the boisterous youngsters. But with organisation, a change of attitude, and a lot of humour along the way, the Grasshoppers are transformed into a new respectable team, the Glipton Giants.

Absolutely excellent idea to reissue these on DVD, such a treat to watch them in decent quality. I was a bit too young at the time to see this but have a real soft spot for 70s 80s childrens dramas (even though is more comedy than drama, but still the acting is gritty and spot on). Now, if only we could proper DVD’s of Murphy’s Mob!
