Podcast of the Week: SMERSH POD

❉ So many podcasts, so little time. If you’re looking for ear candy, we’re here to help!

We’re big fans of podcasts here at We Are Cult. As listeners we’re always looking for new shows to subscribe to.

Each week we will be profiling must-hear podcasts by giving podcast creators a platform to tell us about their shows in their own words.

This week: SMERSH POD, a new podcast celebrating all the James Bond films, hosted by John Rain.

What’s your podcast about?

SMERSH POD is a celebration of Bond films by those who enjoy/hate/aren’t arsed about them. I examine each film in order and have a chat about them with a top special guest. Bond films have entertained, frustrated, upset, excited, bored, aroused and invigorated the peoples of the World for 50+ years now. We have ALL wanted to kick a giant with metal teeth in the balls, fly a small plane out of a pretend horse’s arse and smooch with Fiona Fullerton at one time or another –and those are just three examples of things James Bond has achieved on screen. If THAT isn’t worth talking about, then I am wasting my time (what a break through).

If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?

I talk about James Bond films with other people – SAD!

Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener? Do you have a favourite episode?

Start with Dr. No (episode one) and go from there. We have only done three so far (Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and a tribute to George Lazenby), but there are lots and lots more to come.

What inspired you to create this podcast?

I have had a deep love of Bond films since I was a kid and I feel it’s time that I to commit these observations to record. I have watched these films more times then I can mention and it’s time I shared my love/pain with the World. People need to know that Timothy Dalton does a head-butt in each of his films, that Sean Connery is both fat AND thin in Diamonds are Forever, that Pierce Brosnan recorded THE most boring DVD commentary for Die Another Day that has ever been heard, and that Roger Moore and Grace Jones had a dildo in bed with them in A View to a Kill. These are just a few facts and many more will be revealed episode by episode.

Which guests have you had on your podcast?

So far we have had the great @ErnMalley (reluctant meme generator), Paul Whitelaw (TV and arts critic) and Matt Owen (comedy writer) – but we have some further very exciting guests in the pipeline (such as Al Murray, Robin Ince, Joel Morris, Bilal Zafar, Aaron Gillies, Sarah Phelps, Eddie Robson, Julia Reaside and many many more).

Who would be your dream guest?

Dream guest would be Timothy Dalton.

Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?

I just use my Macbook Pro, Skype and my highly ripping banter.

What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?

I think 40 minutes is a good length – it gets the message across and doesn’t make everyone hate you too much (though in my case it should probably be 4 minutes).

Which podcasts (other than yours) would you recommend we listen to?

I love We Hate Movies, WTF, Adam Buxton, The Flophouse and am really enjoying Athletico Mince.

Where is your podcast available to listen to?

What is the future of podcasting as a creative medium?

It’s given everyone from professional broadcasters to genuine total idiots (me) the ability to get a radio show out to the World for free. It’s one of the best things (apart from You Tube, dogging and ECards) to come out of the invention of the internet. I can see it being around for years and years to come (cut to footage of five years from now where we are all living in a post-nuclear cave trying to kill each other for a Happy Shopper biscuit).
