Glen Matlock and Earl Slick reunite for new single!

❉ The rock legends’ collaboration ‘Consequences Coming’ marks the 44th anniversary since Matlock left The Sex Pistols.

5 March 2021: Long Beach, California’s Stay Free Recordings today release a new collaboration from punk pioneer Glen Matlock and Earl Slick (famed guitarist, known for his work with David Bowie, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Robert Smith and various solo recordings). The single Consequences Coming, backed with a cover of KD Lang’s Constant Craving, is limited to 200 copies (100 in Orange, 100 in Black) and is available from Stay Free Recordings.

Matlock says, “Hi guys, gals and pop pickers. Here are a couple of songs myself and Earl Slick put down in a ‘Basement Tapes meets The Odd Couple’ kind of vibe when Earl got stuck in lockdown in London with me in 2020. They are acoustic versions of a couple of songs from my new forthcoming full band album. One song is a newbie called ‘Consequences Coming’ – as I hope there will be one day in the not too distant future – and the other is our take on KD Lang’s glorious song of longing ‘Constant Craving’. I hope you dig them as much as we do in the spirit and circumstances they were recorded.”

Stay Free Records founder Jon Halperin adds, “I was a fan of the Sex Pistols since 1981. Glen has always been such an icon to me. From the Pistols, to The Rich Kids, to playing with Iggy Pop, to his solo work, he never fails to disappoint. I helped book a three date acoustic tour for him a few years back, and when I started this label, I hit him up. Lucky for me, he had six hours of music recorded with Earl Slick during this pandemic. This record is an absolute bucket list for me.”

The release marks the 44th anniversary since Matlock left The Sex Pistols. The Sex Pistols, however, represent only a fraction of Glen’s legacy. Working with Iggy Pop (who recorded Glen’s song Ambition) during the 80s kept him sharp and sought-after with a body of work during this period giving rise to releases by bands such as The Spectres and Hot Club. In the 1990s Glen emerged as a solo force to be reckoned with. His album Who’s He Think He Is When He’s At Home? recorded for Creation Records, home of Oasis, was a full-on guitar album, blistering in its intensity, taking everyone by surprise.

Headhunted by artists from all backgrounds and styles, both in the U.K. and abroad, has seen Matlock not merely contribute, but shape some of the coolest sounds around. Acclaimed cutting edge albums by Wendy James, Viv Albertine, International Swingers, and King Mob have been enriched by his input, while his own studio projects with Earl Slick & Slim Jim Phantom show a continuing rich vein of inspirational songwriting.

In 2018, with both Earl & Slim Jim on board, he released Good To Go, a solo album that garnered a string of positive press reviews and feedback from fans, many believing it to be his best body of work to date. At the start of 2018, Glen was a guest on the sold-out European Tour with Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly, having just played to a sold out 100 Club featuring Earl Slick, Chris Spedding and Neal X, all of whom guested on the album.

Passing on his vast knowledge and experience to others has become important to Glen (his two sons are making musical waves of their own) and he has latterly embraced college music teaching and motivational speaking. This seems fitting for one of the most famous, yet grounded, musicians to emerge at the forefront of the most turbulent and celebrated musical upheaval in rock ‘n’ roll.
