No stranger to the ways and sounds of Liverpool-based The Room in the Wood, We Are Cult are happy to premiere their latest video for ‘Diamond Clouds’, one of 12 songs released as part of the band’s new album ‘We’re The Martians, Now’.

At its core, The Room in the Wood is Paul Cavanagh and Dave Jackson, who are once again working together after a huge gap since their post-punk band The Room split back in 1985. On his album, they are joined by drummer Colin George Lamont (Mark Lanegan, Dave Gahan), flutist Simon James and back vocals by Helena Jacks.

Some more familiar names are also mixed into this rich pot, with the album having been recorded and mixed by Steve Powell (Michael Head & the Red Elastic Band) at his Liverpool-based Ark Studios. The album was also mastered by Pete Maher (Barry Adamson, The Alarm), one of the more sought-after experts in this field in the UK.

This band may spawn from Beatles territory, but sound much less like the Fab Four than they do like The Doors, Nick Drake, Echo & The Bunnymen or The Velvet Underground. Thank goodness that a new brave wave of artists, are once again bringing new life and sounds to Liverpool, representing a different facet of that city’s music scene and vision. Not only does their sound break sonic stereotypes as far as Liverpool is concerned, but so too is their music seemingly rooted in multiple decades all at the same time. Briliant!

Not long ago, this was previewed by two singles – ‘Charmed’, a beautiful Bacharach-influenced ballad about Britain’s upper class and growing disparity seen in the UK and elsewhere, and ‘Fun of The Fair’ with stomping beats, nods to glam rock, name-checking T-Rex, 70s reminiscence and youth gang escapades.

The videos for both songs were created by the wonderful Mark Jordan, who set things in scene. The ‘Charmed’ video also features footage of Dave Jackson and Paul Cavanagh, filmed by Sarah Ryan.

This album follows their the band’s sci-fi inspired ‘Mars EP’, released in late 2018. Prior to this, the Liverpool outfit released their debut album ‘The Room in the Wood’ and the ‘Magical Thinking’ EP earlier that same year.

‘We’re The Martians, Now’ should be available on coloured vinyl as of the first week of May, but is already out on CD and digitally across music stores and streaming platforms.
