Podcast of the Week: False Starts

❉ False Starts – A podcast about the presumptuous pictures and foolhardy films the studio thought would get a sequel. But never did.

We’re big fans of podcasts here at We Are Cult, and we’re always looking for more shows to subscribe to. So if you’re looking for ear candy, we’re here to help!

This week: Ash, Dan and Lewis tell us all about False Starts Podcast, in which they discuss the movies that Execs thought would be so much more than it was. If a movie was made, only to kick-start a franchise, but failed at the first hurdle – they’re there to mock it…

What’s your podcast about?

We are a movie review show with a focus on movies that had sequels in the works but were ultimately cancelled. “A Podcast about the mishandled movies and foolhardy films that the studio execs were sure would start a franchise, but fell at the first hurdle.”

If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?

Overzealous Executives. Unfiltered Rambles. Polite British Anger. Sexy Compulsive Liars.

Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener?

I’d recommend starting with an episode that features a movie you have strong feelings for or against.

Do you have a favourite episode?

My personal favourite is Ep3. Doom.

Because I just could not cope with that movie and was genuinely on the verge of lightly murdering Ashley. One of my co-hosts.

What inspired you to create this podcast?

There was no divine spark. We were on a bus coming home. We’d had a couple of beers. Dan turned to me and said “We should start a podcast”. Being drunk at the time I agreed and now I’m stuck having to watch movies like Doom and Howard The Duck every month.

Which guests have you had on your podcast so far?

We don’t tend to have guests, we’re not against it, it’s just with 3 voices already things could get muddled. Plus everyone lives in America, it’s very difficult to make things work time wise. And if they don’t live in America they live a good 15 miles away which means leaving the house and that’s a whole other can of worms.

Who would be your dream guest?

Dan’s dream guest is Christopher Walken. Lewis’s dream guest is Kermit the Frog. (Can we have those two on together?) Ashley – Brandon Sanderson.

Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?

We’re still pretty early days so we’re just using some fifine usb studio mics directly into a MacBook Pro. However we’ve just invested in a behringer mixer and some shiny XLR mics. It all gets recorded in audacity. Dan edits in Logic Pro. Then I’ll take it into Premiere just for a quick pass to balance things out. Reduce noice. Compress an limit as needs be. It’s a process that can definitely be streamlined but who wants to take the easy way out?

What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?

I’d say the best length of time for a podcast is between 45 and 90 minutes. Not ONCE have we hit that mark. We’re a 2 hour pod, minimum. If you’ve got a long commute or a flight. We’re the pod you pick. Though Ash says 3 hours is best. Because he’s awkward.

Which podcasts (other than yours) would you recommend we listen to?

Super Best Friends. OSW Review. Adults do Disney. Untold: The Daniel Morgan Murder. Sans pants Radio. Then all the obvious ones. Adam Buxton, Richard Herrring, Infinite Monkey Cage. No Such Thing as a Fish. My Dad Wrote a Porno. But none of those guys need the promotion.

Where is your podcast available to listen to?

We’re on iTunes, Podomatic and SoundCloud. And you can reach us on Twitter, Facebook and Reddit @FalseStartsPod

What is the future of podcasting as a creative medium?

I think the future will have a lot more narrative based podcasts. Short series. Nexflix-esq binge podcasts. Missing Richard Simmons and S-Town was sort of that and Marvel are getting into the game soon with their own MPU (marvel podcast universe). I think if that does well you’ll see a lot more people follow suit. DC will probably rush one out and it’ll be mixed horribly cos they’ve had to mix around superman’s beard rubbing on the mic. Don’t @ me.
