Podcast of the Week: Bigmouth

Bigmouth is pop culture talk for discerning grown-ups.

We’re big fans of podcasts here at We Are Cult, and we’re always looking for new shows to subscribe to. So if you’re looking for ear candy, we’re here to help!

This week: Matt Hall tells us all about Bigmouth podcast.

What’s your podcast about?

Things that shouldn’t really matter to grown people.

If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?

London, New York, Paris, Munich – Bigmouth talks about pop culture.

Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener? Do you have a favourite episode?

I’m particularly fond of Ep #39, where we discussed Trainspotting and Rag’n’ Bone Man with Will Hodgkinson from The Times and Miranda Sawyer.

What inspired you to create this podcast?

I first met Andrew when he was editor of Select magazine and I was a producer at Radio 1. We both worked on fondly remembered podcast from The Word magazine, and after I’d left The Guardian where I helped run their podcast output we got together and fancied doing something which enabled us to sit around and chat about stuff we liked.

Which guests have you had on your podcast so far?

We’ve basically asked loads of our mates and people we’ve known from knocking around magazines, newspapers and radio stations over the last thirty years. So people like Alexis Petridis, Robin Turner from Heavenly Records, Jude Rogers… the best reviewers in the business, basically

Who would be your dream guest?

the show works because our guests are on the same wavelength as us – I’m not sure big names would get the vibe of the show.

Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?

We record at Soho Radio, so their podcast studio set up. And I edit on Audacity on a MacBook Air.

What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?

Our show goes out on Soho Radio on a Sunday morning (soho radio.com) and we then take most of the music out, so the podcast is around 40 minutes. It works for a weekly show.

Which podcasts (other than yours) would you recommend we listen to?

I’m enjoying ‘Truth & Movies’, the new movie review show hosted by James Richardson, the presenter of the Guardian’s Football Weekly. And I love Unbreak My Chart, where Laura Snapes & Fraser McAlpine are snarky and informative about the top 40, often at the same time.

What is the future of podcasting as a creative medium?

Been thinking about this a lot. It’s got a great future, in the same way video has a great future. We just might not know what that future is at the moment…
