❉ On 19 November Derby Film Festival will be celebrating one of Britain’s most significant screenwriters of the twentieth century.
Credited by Mark Gatiss as “the inventor of modern television”, Nigel Kneale’s works included the Quatermass serials, The Year of the Sex Olympics, The Stone Tape, Beasts and essential television adaptations of The Woman in Black and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Although not as widely lauded in his lifetime as many of his contemporaries, Kneale was a profound influence for many writers and filmmakers, including John Carpenter, Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King, and his shadow falls over a vast number of television series and films, among them The X-Files, The League of Gentlemen and, of course, Doctor Who.
To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Nigel Kneale’s birth, this day-long event features expert panels and members of the cast looking at Kneale’s work in television and his influence and legacy. There will also be a live reading of his lost 1971 Out of the Unknown episode The Chopper, and screenings of several of Kneale’s classic works, including:
Quatermass and the Pit: Hob (1959)
The climatic episode of one of the greatest television series ever made.
Against the Crowd: Murrain (1975)
Multi layered TV folk horror that sets science up against superstition.
Theatre 625: The World of George Orwell: 1984 (1965)
An ultra rare chance to see this second version of Kneale’s adaptation, introduced by cast members Jane Merrow and Vernon Dobtcheff.
The Woman in Black (1989)
Kneale’s last great work? The classic Christmas Ghost Story with a special introduction.
