Christopher Guard: ‘And Then It Was Now’

A memoir by the actor/musician Christopher Guard, with a foreword by Brian Blessed OBE.

Actor, singer-songwriter, and artist Christopher Guard has starred in many films and television shows in a career that’s spanned over fifty years; including the roles of Bellboy in Doctor Who’s classic The Greatest Show in the Galaxy serial, Jim Hawkins in Disney’s lavish Return to Treasure Island series (alongside Brian Blessed as Long John Silver), and as Frodo in Ralph Bakshi’s seminal animated version of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

He’s worked alongside Sir Ian McKellen, Liam Neeson, Dame Diana Rigg, Julie Christie, and Elizabeth Taylor (to name but some) and been directed by Sir Peter Hall and Hal Prince, working for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre as well as performing his own award-winning songs at festivals and legendary venues like Ronnie Scott’s.

He even had high praise from the iconic composer Stephen Sondheim, who cited him as ‘the only one with natural rhythm’ when in rehearsals for the film version of A Little Night Music. All of which he explores in his kaleidoscopic memoir, And Then It Was Now.

Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean, Doctor Who, The Crown) writes this about the book: “A cracking read, both funny and heartfelt. The childhood section is so well-handled, as is the evocation of our acting profession in times gone by. And what wonderful memories of friends, acquaintances, and those I’ve admired from afar.”
