WIN ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ (1990) – new to DVD and Blu-Ray!

❉ Out on Monday from Fabulous Films – the 1990 film starring Natasha Richardson, Faye Dunaway and Robert Duvall.

In Margaret Atwood’s nightmarish fable and feminist classic, the United States of America has become The Republic of Gilead, a right-wing totalitarian state. Women are subjugated and powerless in society. The world is rife with disease and infection, and few women remain who can have children: those who can are taken by the government, and christened ‘handmaids’. Kate, a handmaid, is sent to the house of Fred, the Commander. There she must submit to his demands, and those of Serena Joy, his jealous, vindictive wife. But some things cannot be controlled by The Republic – like Kate’s growing feelings for The Commander’s chauffeur Nick. Or the secret resistance, who meet under darkness.

In 1986 Margaret Atwood sold the rights to The Handmaid’s Tale to producer Daniel Wilson. With Pinter’s script Wilson spent two and a half years approaching every studio in Hollywood. Canadian journalist Sheldon Teitelbaum wrote that film executives chose not to back the project, stating “that a film for and about women … would be lucky if it made it to video.”

Adapted from the bestselling dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood, the screenplay was written by Harold Pinter and it stars Natasha Richardson, Faye Dunaway, Aidan Quinn, Elizabeth McGovern, Victoria Tennant and Robert Duvall.

The recent Channel 4 TV series of The Handmaid’s Tale won eight Emmys in 2017, with Elisabeth Moss picking up Best Actress and Ann Dowd winning Best Supporting Actress. The award success continued in 2018 after the show won two Golden Globes, one for the Best Drama Series and again for Elisabeth Moss as Best Actress. Season Two will premiere in 2018.
