Simply Media today announce the release of The Prince of Denmark, starring Ronnie Corbett, released on DVD for the very first time 17 July 2017.
First shown by the BBC in 1974, this largely forgotten gem of a series was the third sitcom written by acclaimed comedy writers Graham Chapman (Monty Python’s Flying Circus) and Barry Cryer (The Kenny Everett Television Show). The Prince of Denmark was produced by BAFTA-winner and Fawlty Towers Producer Douglas Argent, and the similarities between the two comedies are clear to see.
BAFTA-winner and ‘National Treasure’ Ronnie Corbett stars as hapless everyman and overgrown mother’s boy Ronnie, who has finally freed himself from the shackles of living at home. Now he has to cope with the real world and married life.
A sequel to the widely popular No – That’s Me Over Here!, the slightly pompous (but still lovable) Ronnie’s know-it-all character proved so popular with audiences, Ronnie Corbett would go on to play a very similar character in the later – and hugely successful – series Sorry!
When Ronnie’s long-suffering wife Laura (BAFTA-nominee Rosemary Leach – A Room with a View) inherits a frayed-at-the-edges pub, a comedy of errors is unleashed as Ronnie, a former insurance salesman, struggles to adapt to life as a landlord.
Ronnie, thinking he knows better, frequently ignores the advice of those around him, including experienced and dependable barman Steve (David Warwick). He chooses to run the pub his way with the intention of creating an up-market establishment. But, not unlike Basil Fawlty’s humiliating situations in Fawlty Towers, Ronnie finds himself overwhelmed by the challenges of publican life, and frequently lands himself in trouble.
Such mishaps include insulting a brewery rep posing as a customer, coping poorly with a rugby team on a rowdy binge, and having no clue how to deal with a woman about to give birth on his billiards table! A cast of irregular regulars to the pub also feature across the episodes, including a raging alcoholic commuter who always misses train after train (played by Tim Barrett – Terry and June), and a crossword addict who only talks in cryptic riddles (Michael Nightingale – Carry On).
