Podcast of the Week: Wrong Reel

This week: Wrong Reel, a podcast for hardcore cinephiles, film fanatics and movie buffs of all kinds.

We’re big fans of podcasts here at We Are Cult, and we’re always looking for new shows to subscribe to. So if you’re looking for ear candy, we’re here to help!

Each week we will be profiling must-hear podcasts by giving podcast creators a platform to tell us about their shows in their own words.

This week: James Hancock tells us all about Wrong Reel.

What’s your podcast about?

Wrong Reel is a podcast for hardcore cinephiles and movie fanatics. We spend as much time looking back at the filmographies of great filmmakers of the past as we do reviewing new movies and sharing the most interesting movie-related news that grabs our attention.

If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?

A caffeine-fueled rampage through the best of film history.

Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener? Do you have a favourite episode?

The answer to both questions is one and the same. On WR224 I sat down to talk with actress Lisi Tribble Russell to discuss the films of her late husband Ken Russell. Lisi is the kind of guest I wish I could get on the podcast each and every episode.

What inspired you to create this podcast?

While there are many great podcasts out there, I wasn’t finding one that appealed specifically to my interests. I love looking back at the careers of great filmmakers as a whole and then learning everything I can about what took place behind the scenes on their movies. My favorite episodes are those where I am able to indulge this obsession of mine.

Which guests have you had on your podcast so far?

We’ve recorded over 200 episodes so it would be difficult to list them all here but we love inviting back recurring guest hosts like Marcus Pinn from Pinnland Empire and Martin Kessler from the Flixwise Podcast.

Who would be your dream guest?

My dream guest would be to summon the ghost of Orson Welles from his grave and then talk to him for as long as the summoning spell would last.

Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?

We record audio with the Sony Zoom H6 Handy Recorder in person and I have recently started using Call Recorder for Skype for any interviews conducted online. For our editing, I just cut the episodes with Audacity and then post them to our 3rd party host site Libsyn which distributes our content to our various platforms.

What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?

Totally depends on the topic and how long the speakers remain engaged. My ideal length of time to record is about two hours but then I typically do some editing after the fact. Caffeine and occasionally alcohol play a large role as well.

Which podcasts (other than yours) would you recommend we listen to?

For film history it is tough to beat Karina Longworth’s podcast ‘You Must Remember This‘. That said I listen to all kinds of podcasts on a variety of topics including Elvis Mitchell’s ‘The Treatment’, Daniele Bolelli’s ‘History on Fire’, UFC Unfiltered, The Joe Rogan Experience or any podcast that manages to book a director whose work interests me.

Where is your podcast available to listen to?

The best places to find Wrong Reel are iTunes, Stitcher Radio or on our site wrongreel.com

What is the future of podcasting as a creative medium?

My hope is that ten or fifteen years from now, we’ll be looking back at this era as the baby steps to an even more exciting landscape. There are practically no financial boundaries to starting a podcast, so it makes sense that really dynamic and interesting perspectives will continue to emerge. I never want to grow lazy or complacent in my approach and I firmly believe healthy competition will keep us on our toes and force us to always try and deliver the best show possible.
