Podcast of the Week: The Benji and Nick Show

This week: Sound effects geniuses Benji Clifford and Nicholas Briggs – who you may know from the Big Finish Podcast – discuss all manner of cult television and pop culture.

We’re big fans of podcasts here at We Are Cult, and we’re always looking for more shows to subscribe to. So if you’re looking for ear candy, we’re here to help!

This week: Sound wizard Benji Clifford tells us all about The Benji and Nick Show, a podcast where Benji and Big Finish producer Nicholas Briggs talk about sci-fi, movies, TV, currant buns, Spitfires, all their favourite topics and more.

What’s your podcast about?

The Benji and Nick Show is a weekly podcast where myself and Dalek Voice extraordinaire Nick Briggs discuss all manner of cult television and pop-culture, with a healthy dose of tangential banter on the side. Whether it’s a programme we’ve grown up loving, a rarity that we haven’t seen before or a recommendation from our listeners, we always try to have fun and plunge into something completely different each week. The podcast is also sponsored by the Gerry Anderson Store, so we regularly discuss the fabulous back catalogue of Anderson television and even offer discounts on new products.  As well as that, we also have plenty of regular fixtures including emails and competitions!

If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?

Two friends in your local pub talking complete nostalgic rubbish.

Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener? Do you have a favourite episode?

The beauty of our podcast is that each episode focusses on a different release, so if you’re not sure where to start, there should hopefully be something there that you would have heard about. If not, I’d recommend our episode on ‘Catweazle’, as we both had such fun talking about that one – it’s a telly programme that we both hold very close to our hearts.

What inspired you to create this podcast?

We both started podcasting together for ‘The Big Finish Podcast’ but kept finding that we’d mention a tv show in conversation and then want to branch out and chat about it. Eventually, we realised we were spending a good hour talking about those shows after the podcast recording had finished, so it felt natural to turn it into its own little podcast.

Which guests have you had on your podcast so far?

In its inception, we hadn’t planned on featuring any guests due to us featuring weekly guests on our other podcast. However, lately we’ve got into the habit of phoning Jamie Anderson and pestering him about cult telly! I don’t think he was best pleased this morning when we phoned him whilst he was cooking some eggs! He did give us a fantastic insight into the making of ‘Space 1999’ on last week’s episode, which I recommend to all Anderson fans!

Who would be your dream guest?

After covering ITV’s ‘Ace of Wands’ on the podcast recording this morning, I’d love for us to have a chat with Michael Mackenzie (Tarot) about his time working on the show. There seems to be such a special, magical vibe about that programme, it’s a real cult TV gem!

Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?

We record our podcast remotely and sync up the two recordings in post-production. I’m currently using an SE2000 microphone, Focusrite Saffire audio interface and recording into Logic Pro X. I believe Nick uses a similar audio interface and then mixes us together in Pro Tools.

What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?

I tend to think 45 minutes to an hour is a sensible amount of time. Enough for someone to enjoy on the morning commute, without having to stop mid-way or resume on their way home. If you can give people an action-packed hour of content, then it should hopefully satisfy their podcast appetite whilst leaving them excited for the next episode.

Which podcasts (other than yours) would you recommend we listen to?

Can I recommend our other podcast ‘The Big Finish Podcast’? You get to listen to a lot of exclusive previews of audio drama versions of shows like Doctor Who, The Prisoner, Survivors, The Avengers and more! In my spare time, I love to listen to lots of completely different things. I’m a huge fan of ‘Critical Role’, which features brilliant voice actors who tell stories through the medium of Dungeons and Dragons. I also love ‘Dan Show’s History Hit’ and wrestling commentator Jim Ross’ weekly podcast ‘The Ross Report’.
