Podcast of the Week: The Bad Wilf Podcast

❉ The Bad Wilf Podcast, with topics ranging from Doctor Who to other sci-fi shows and general chit-chat.

We’re big fans of podcasts here at We Are Cult, and we’re always looking for new shows to subscribe to. So if you’re looking for ear candy, we’re here to help!

This week: Martyn Vincent tells us all about The Bad Wilf Podcast.

What’s your podcast about?

We masquerade as a film and TV/Review site. But mostly it’s an excuse we use for our girlfriends, when we want to get drunk and talk geek.

If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?

Pseudo-new wave with a punk inflection.

Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener? Do you have a favourite episode?

I would recommend starting with the interviews, we’ve had some great ones with people like Sir John Hurt, Alex Winter, David Zayas and Matt Smith, to name a few. I enjoy the interviews most, I’ve been very fortune to meet people who have inspired me.

What inspired you to create this podcast?

My best friend and I became fathers around the same time, we realised that we were talking less and less. But after each episode of Doctor Who, we would call each other and discuss the episode. So we started recording the conversations and releasing them as podcasts. As soon as our enjoyment of Doctor Who faded, we became a general TV/Film review podcast.

Which guests have you had on your podcast so far?

We’ve collaborated with some other podcasters, I’ve even managed to become good friends with hosts of shows I’ve enjoyed for years.

In terms of celebrity guests, we’ve had some people from Torchwood, Doctor Who, Bill from Bill and Ted, Felicia Day, Sir John Hurt, people from Arrow and The Flash, Aidan Turner (that one crashed our website).

Martyn: Founding member of The Bad Wilf Podcast.

Who would be your dream guest?

Rosario Dawson.

Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?

For the past 7 years we’ve been using a zoom H1, but I recently upgraded to a zoom H5. For interviews Via Skype, I use a USB mic and a Skype recorder called Ecamms.

What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?

I’ve always tried to keep them at 30-45 minutes long, as that tends to be the average commute to work.

Which podcasts (other than yours) would you recommend we listen to?

Geeksyndicate,Who’s He Podcast, Progtor Who, Skip to the end, Big Blue Box podcast, Mark & Me and Coffee Break French (I’ve started learning French).

Where is your podcast available to listen to?

It can be found at www.badwilf.com, we’ve also started doing more on YouTube recently www.youtube.com/badwilf.

What is the future of podcasting as a creative medium?

I think the entire future of media will be some-what podcast based, it’s just such a great distribution method. Technology on phones has gotten so good over the past ten years, that even recording on a voice memo app can sound professional. I can see more and more outlets moving to podcasting
