What’s your podcast about?
Comedy and how it works. But not in a clinical, bollocky way. We “dissect the frog” but the resulting mess is hopefully still funny. Robert McKee we ain’t.
If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?
A good comedy podcast about good comedy by good comedy people. How’s that?
Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener? Do you have a favourite episode?
It’s too early for favourites. Treat it like an exotic futuristic tub of Quality Street and try all the new flavours. Don’t leave the yellow ones til last. They’re actually the best ones.
What inspired you to create this podcast?
Partly attending The Craft Of Comedy in Llandudno, which is the Comedy Party Conference. We’ve been going a few years and each year feels like another chapter in an ongoing conversation about comedy. But also the desire to not have to make an as-close-to-radio-quality bit of chat, without having to shove anything through a narrow commissioning slot that will lose lots of its protein on the way through.
Which guests have you had on your podcast so far?
John Finnemore, Danielle Ward, Isy Suttie and Jon Holmes are already out there in the wild, like feral entertainers. And we’ve got a lot more banked and planned. We made sure we had a cracking line up before we released the first one, so we didn’t find ourselves floundering three weeks in.
Who would be your dream guest?
It would have been Victoria Wood. What a loss. What a talent. Death’s a right shit, isn’t it?
Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?
A laptop, a red thing, three SM58s and the smallest possible room, which is luckily not only the acoustic ideal, but a fair description of our office.
What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?
We’ve been told it’s 42 minutes. Douglas Adams would have approved.

What is the future of podcasting as a creative medium?
Good question. It’s an evolving model. But that’s why it’s fun to be on its nursery slopes. What’s the worst that can happen? You end up Eddie The Eagle? The most exciting idea is to be an alternative to broadcasting. Narrowcasting. Reaching many small, but deep, audiences. So many sorts of audio – comedy, drama, niche factual – work better in that model than they do through the old channels.
