Podcast of the Week: Pat & Clive Comedy Podcast

❉ This week: Puerile and silly nonsense from characters Pat Riley and Clive Sutcliffe.

We’re big fans of podcasts here at We Are Cult, and we’re always looking for more shows to subscribe to. So if you’re looking for ear candy, we’re here to help!

This week: Vaun Earl Norman and John O’Sullivan tell us all about the world of Pat Riley and Clive Sutcliffe –  two outsiders trying to get a look into the world of celebrity, showbiz and autographs.

What’s your podcast about?

VAUN: Pat and Clive are two characters that John O’Sullivan and I came up with separately as characters ringing into a Talk Radio programme hosted by Iain Lee. We both found mutual fans in each other. So after communicating on Twitter and phone we decided to do something together. We first thought of doing some videos for a YouTube channel, but it’s prohibitively expensive, so we decided to make an audio podcast. Pat and Clive are outsiders, they’re not mentally ill or have learning difficulties but are the types some less enlightened people in society would see as different, and ostracise. Pat is a naughty man child who is obsessed with celebrity, always getting Clive into trouble. Clive is a committed Christian lives with his mum, innocent but thinks he’s in control and tries to look after Pat. The podcast is a surreal journey into the dark world of celebrity obsession, religion, sex, sexuality. One of episodes we hear Pat wrestle a naked David Dickinson in his back garden, another sees Clive seriously injure a Gibbon after it attacked him. Another episode we’re tasked by Clive’s local priest to take Nun from Clive’s church to a rehab /religious retreat in North Wales. Its puerile, silly nonsense, but we’re refining it as we go along.

JOHN:  It’s about two social misfits who have made friends and embark on a dark world which involves an unhealthy love of celebrity

If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?

VAUN: The Adventures of two idiots, who don’t realise they are.

JOHN: It’s far funnier than My Dad Writes A Porno

Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener? Do you have a favourite episode?

JOHN: We have only done a few but Episode 2 is brilliant because the production of it is so good and it’s gloriously dirty.

VAUN: I really like the second episode entitled Katie Hopkins Celebrity Death Special?. We use sound effects a lot and I like this it’s not used a lot in podcasts and this episode is one I’m very proud for the effects.

What inspired you to create this podcast?

VAUN: Our characters were perfect for getting together somehow, and when I spoke to John it seemed so natural to do podcasts, John is such a lovely man and it was easy to decide to work with him.

JOHN: Vaun, who plays Clive; without him I wouldn’t be doing this.

Which guests have you had on your podcast so far?

VAUN: We’ve had a couple of twitter regulars, my Mum, and we’ve got a celebrity lined up for a future episode. I don’t want to say who yet, as we’ve yet to sort out things.

JOHN : We have a very lovely guest for Ep3. I can’t believe he wants to be associated with our mucky podcasts.

Who would be your dream guest?

VAUN: Dean Gaffney, perfect celebrity.

JOHN: John Barrowman. He’s so dishy

Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?

JOHN: I use a microphone Vaun told me to get and then I sit in wardrobe like a big weirdo.

VAUN: We record separately, me in North Yorkshire, John in West Sussex, we use Apple Macs and Audacity, we use Blue Snowball and Citronic microphones, I use a couple of other apps for sound production and sound effects. Very basic equipment really.

What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?

We believe for our type of comedy sketch/sitcom 30 to 40 minutes maximum.

Which podcasts (other than yours) would you recommend we listen to?

VAUN: I personally love Richard Herring, Robin Ince, Brian Gittins, Athletico Mince, Adam Buxton, trouble is since starting ours I don’t get a chance to listen to any.

JOHN: I can’t be arsed to listen to anyone else. Just ours.

Where is your podcast available to listen to?

VAUN: We’re on iTunes, Soundcloud, and if you search for Pat and Clive on any of the podcast apps we come up.

JOHN: iTunes but we should be on Radio 4 ( late at night) cos we’re ruddy funny.

What is the future of podcasting as a creative medium?

VAUN: I think that radio and TV work will be commissioned more and more from podcasts or other Web based creative medium. The traditional routes of entry into TV and radio comedy are so difficult now. TV companies seem reluctant to take a punt on a treatment or even a full script. A commissioning editor or producer can listen or watch a podcast and see a well written, well put together, professionally produced piece of work, they can see how popular it is and therefore to some degree the likelihood of it being successful, before they take the risk. Obviously nothing is guaranteed  but traditional broadcast TV is more risk averse than ever.

JOHN: I think it’s a great way of getting noticed and more likely to get your material seen if you write and produce a funny and popular podcast. Subscribe to Pat and Clive on ITunes or I’ll poo through your letterbox.

CLIVE: Is this going into the St. Gertrude of the Immaculate Conception Newsletter? Should I talk about prostates and seepage?

PAT: That was fun! Bye X.
