Podcast of the Week: Frigays

This week: A sideways look at the antics of the Ramsay Street residents.

We’re big fans of podcasts here at We Are Cult, and we’re always looking for more shows to subscribe to. So if you’re looking for ear candy, we’re here to help!

This week: Daniel and Ben tell us all about Frigays, a podcast about everyone’s favourite Australian soap, ‘Neighbours’.

What’s your podcast about?

Frigays is all about everyone’s favourite Australian soap ‘Neighbours’. Taking a sideways look at the antics of the Ramsay Street residents on a fortnightly basis, listeners can expect a rundown of all the main storylines, and with over 50 years of ‘Neighbours’ viewing between hosts Daniel and Ben, plenty of nostalgic throwbacks to times gone by chucked in for good measure.

If you had to describe your show in 10 words or less, what would you say?

Fun & relevant commentary (with satire) podcast about ‘unmissable drama’.

Which episode would you recommend for a first-time listener? Do you have a favourite episode?

Listeners returning to ‘Neighbours’ after a break should check out Frigays ‘Episode 0: The one you should listen to if you haven’t watched Neighbours in years‘. This episode will help answer all those burning questions you might have like: Who’s still in it from the 80s? What channel is it on? And for those people unsure what the life expectancy of a dog is, you can find out if Bouncer is still in it.

If you’re not needing a ‘Neighbours’ refresher, check out ‘Episode 6: Exposition Week (Explained)’ if only to listen to the surprising cameos of Adele and Lionel Richie!

What inspired you to create this podcast?

Daniel and Ben first hit it off on Twitter, bonding over our love for the unmissable and often bonkers drama from Down Under. With Daniel’s eagle-eyes that can spot the smallest of details, like a $1 price hike in the price of blueberry muffins at the coffee shop, and Ben’s [somewhat worrying] encyclopaedic knowledge of the show as the Inside Soap ‘Neighbours’ Superfan of 1995, we started to think that perhaps we could offer a different perspective on the ‘Neighbours’ world and give loyal viewers something to enjoy to fill the gap whilst the show is off-air.

Which guests have you had on your podcast so far?

None as of yet due to the distance of London and Melbourne. We also only started in September 2017, so we are relatively young in the podcasting world.

Who would be your dream guest?

Daniel and Ben would love ‘Neighbours’ actress Jodi Anasta, who plays Susan Kennedy’s niece Elly Conway, to join us for a game of #DrinkLikeElly. This is a drinking game where viewers watch along LIVE in the evening and we match Elly drink-for-drink on-screen when she is in The Waterhole, which always ends in carnage as Elly is never any more than an arms length from a glass of fizz!

Which equipment do you use for your podcast set-up?

A Behringer USB mixing desk, Audacity (with a view to moving to Tracktion T6 DAW soon) and Anua mics. A perfect combo for a great rich and clear sound.

What would you say is the best length of time for a podcast episode?

35 minutes is the maximum length we go for. If we have too much material we split the same recorded episode into two parts and release it a few days apart.

Which podcasts (other than yours) would you recommend we listen to?

Rough Giraffe, Back of the Grid, Theme Park Films, and IsNotRadio

Where is your podcast available to listen to?

Everywhere! Frigays.com, iTunes, PodBean, ACast and many more platforms.

What is the future of podcasting as a creative medium?

Anyone can plug-in a microphone into a computer and start their own podcast. The future of this medium will and can only allow for greater focus on better talent and content.
