‘Film Noir: A Critical Guide’ revised and updated

❉ Eddie Robson has updated and republished his guide to film noir.

Born out of the dread and paranoia generated by the Second World War, the film noir movement continues to fascinate viewers and influence filmmakers. A new sensibility seeped into American crime movies, one of femme fatales, fractured narratives and ambiguous heroes.

Writer Eddie Robson (Welcome To Our Village, Please Invade Carefully, Doctor Who, 2000AD) has updated and republished his guide to film noir, ‘Film Noir: A Critical Guide To 1940s & 1950s Hollywood Noir’, as an ebook.

This book tells the story of the film noir movement through eighteen key movies, covering directors like Orson Welles, Billy Wilder and John Huston and stars like Robert Mitchum, Humphrey Bogart and Barbara Stanwyck, giving background of their production and offering analysis. In between, it looks at other significant examples and concludes with a survey of noir from beyond the Hollywood of the 1940s and 1950s.

The films covered in detail are Stranger On the Third Floor, The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, Murder, My Sweet, Detour, The Big Sleep, The Killers, Out Of The Past, The Lady From Shanghai, Force Of Evil, Gun Crazy, Sunset Boulevard, The Big Heat, The Big Combo, Kiss Me Deadly, The Night Of The Hunter, The Killing and Touch Of Evil.
